Bookcases With Doors, and How Much Stays Dust Free

How Much of the Shelf Space Is Actually Enclosed

Not most of them. The best selling layout in this category is mixed: two closed compartments at the bottom and two or three open shelves above. It photographs as a closed bookcase and works as an open one for most of its length. That is why this table sorts by enclosed shelf feet, the length of shelf that actually sits behind a door, and shows the enclosed share next to it.

Glass, Acrylic and Why the Photos Do Not Tell You Which

In a product photo, acrylic and glass look the same. In use they do not: acrylic scratches when you wipe it and yellows in direct sun. Under $200, what the photos call glass is often acrylic, and the listing does not always say so.

• Look for the word tempered. A maker that paid for tempered glass names it; plain "glass" with no qualifier is worth a question to the seller.
• Compare the package weight with a similar unit with solid doors. Real glass adds several pounds per door; acrylic adds almost nothing.

A Door With No Back Panel Is Decoration

A bookcase with doors is bought to keep dust off the books, and across much of the catalog it does not.

The Door Only Works If There Is a Back

Dust gets in through three gaps even with the door shut. The first is the back: many units with doors have a partial back panel or just two rails, so air moves straight through. The second is the gap between the two leaves of a double door with no center magnet or stop. The third is the mixed layout, the best seller of the category, where the buyer thinks the bookcase is closed and only a third of it is.

Of the 322 bookcases in this table, 200 close only part of their shelves and 85 do not state a full back panel. The best sellers, with all three numbers:

⚠ partly open, or without a stated full back. Enclosed feet estimated from the listing.

If dust is not the concern and you only want the look, an open unit holds more for the money; compare them in the bookshelves table.

Barrister Lift Up Doors Against Side Hinged

A barrister bookcase stacks separate sections, each with a glass door that lifts up and slides back into the top. Every shelf has its own door, so the whole unit is enclosed, and the doors open without needing room to swing. The trade off is short sections and doors that stick if the stack is not level.

Side hinged doors are simpler and seal better when they close on a frame, but they need clearance in front and a center stop on double doors. Sliding doors save that clearance and always leave half the unit closed while the other half is open.

Load Per Shelf in a Closed Carcass

A full row of hardcovers weighs about 24 pounds per linear foot, so a 30 inch shelf full of books carries around 60 pounds. A closed carcass helps: the back and the doors frame keep the unit square, but they do nothing for the sag in the middle of each shelf, which still depends on the shelf material and span. The doors add their own weight on the hinges, and glass doors are heavy.

Soft Close Hinges, Magnets and the Hardware That Fails

The hinges. Cheap units use small cup hinges screwed into particleboard, and the screw holes strip after a few hundred openings. Soft close hinges slow the door so it does not slam, which also spares the screws. Magnetic catches keep a door shut without a latch but weaken if the door sags. A lock is only as strong as the panel it is screwed into.

What We Exclude From This Table

The table only lists bookcases with doors, checked against each product's Amazon data, not its title alone. Left out:

• Open bookshelves with no doors: they have their own table.
• Listings that state neither the door type nor the door material.
• Units where the only closed part is a drawer.
• Curio cabinets, figure displays and display cases.
• Sideboards, buffets, kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
• Bookshelf speakers, TV stands with doors and multi-unit bundles.
